Flexible Lower GI Endoscopy is nowadays routinely required in the practice of Gastroenterology and GI Surgery. Lower GI Endoscopy plays a very important diagnostic role to differentiate various types of colitis, or diagnose pathologies causing diarrhoea, constipation and rectal bleeding. The technique of polypectomy and other interventional procedures too have expanded over the past few decades.Every surgeon who practices GI surgery therefore is likely to require the help of flexible Lower GI Endoscopy for the diagnosis of pathologies or to plan the surgery. In addition, nowadays many GI diseases can be better tackled by interventional endoscopic techniques rather than by surgery, thereby providing a safe and effective treatment for patients. It is imperative therefore that today’s GI surgeon and especially those who treat colonic pathologies are well versed in the technique of diagnostic Lower GI Endoscopy and basic interventional Lower GI Endoscopy. Lower GI Endoscopy which includes visualization of the colon and terminal ileum is inherently a more difficult procedure than Upper GI Endoscopy requiring more practice and a better hand-eye co-ordination.
